2010 Spring Select is underway.
Team schedules and standings can be found on the
AYSO Area 1B website.

Welcome to Claremont's Select Program.  Below you will find general information regarding our Select Program.  We encourage coaches who meet the criteria to consider submitting an application.  The Select Program provides the coach, as well as the kids, an opportunity to participate in an environment that is more competitive while keeping the principles of AYSO.

HELP WANTED

If you are interested in helping to coordinate the Spring Select program please contact us.

PLAYERS INTERESTED IN PLAYING SELECT OR ON THE GU12 NATIONAL TEAM

We typically form one team in each of the U12-U19 divisions, two teams in the U10 divisions. Teams play at a higher level of competition and player selection is typically based on skill level. Filling out an interest form DOES NOT guarantee that your child will be asked to participate in the Select program.

Please read the Select Overview prior to filling out the interest form.  If you feel your child is ready to participate in the program and would like to be considered for a Spring Select or GU12 Nat'l Team you are encouraged to fill out a Player Interest form. This will also help coaches expedite forming their teams with both players and volunteers. While we do encourage letting us know that your child is interested in playing - players who do not fill out a form can still be invited to join a team.

Teams are usually formed late November and into December (U10-U14). The U16/U19 teams may be formed after the high school season is complete. If you are unsure that you child will be asked to join a Select team and they want to play spring soccer they are encouraged to sign up for the Spring Open league. Registrations can be transferred if they are asked to participate in the Select program.

GU12 Players can apply for both the Nat'l team and the Select team.

  CLAREMONT AYSO REGION 3
SPRING SELECT PROGRAM OVERVIEW

As a coach or as a player, it should be considered an honor to be selected to represent Claremont AYSO. We have been very well represented over the years and hope to continue to provide a positive program for our players and volunteers.

The Spring Select program is designed to allow AYSO players who have demonstrated soccer ability and displayed an attitude of fair play, enthusiasm and cooperative team spirit, an opportunity to participate in a more competitive level of play with players who have similar ability. The program is available for players in the U10-U19 divisions where there are volunteers interested in coaching. This is an AYSO program that combines with other local AYSO regions. Teams may also travel throughout the season to participate in AYSO tournaments.

While the select season may offer inter-regional play and a higher level of competition all participants must uphold the AYSO National rules and philosophies – guaranteed 2 quarters of play in every game, good sportsmanship and positive coaching. Claremont AYSO STRONGLY suggests upholding our guaranteed 3 quarters of play in every game.

TEAM FORMAT
There are two classes of teams: Tournament Teams (TT) and Area Play (AP) teams. The Select Committee will determine the number and format of the team(s) taken from a single division. Team formation will be based on the Area 1B league format and guidelines and will be reviewed prior to team recruitment by the Regional Commissioner. Determination will also be based on the number of players available and coaches interested in coaching a team.

Tournament Teams – Tournament teams will participate in tournaments and will represent Claremont in the Area All-Star tournament. They do not participate in the Area Spring League. The TT coach will have first priority of player selection as they will be expected to participate in a higher degree of competitive play.

Area Play Teams – AP teams will represent Claremont in  the AYSO AREA 1B Spring League. Teams will be scheduled to play some games in Claremont but will also be required to travel to other local regions for games. League dates usually run from February to the end of March and will be scheduled on Saturdays, Sundays and occasionally may have a weeknight game. Teams may also participate in tournaments on weekends when there are no league games scheduled or when the league completes. If more than one AP team is to be taken from a single division the teams will be balanced.

Both team formats usually play in tournaments into the month of June. It is up to the coach to decide how many and which tournaments the team will attend. Teams may choose to participate in not only local tournaments but tournaments outside the local area as well. Tournaments will require teams to play multiple games on both Saturday and Sunday.

COACH SELECTION
Coaches interested in coaching a Spring Select team must complete a coaching application and meet the following requirements:

- Safe Haven Certified
- Completed a LiveScan background check
- Coached during the regular season for the age group s/he is applying for
- Certified in the age group s/he is applying for
- Completed an Intermediate Coaching Course (Will be required to attend if they have not previously been certified)

Applications will be reviewed and the coach will ultimately be chosen by the Select Committee, comprising of the Regional Commissioner, Assistant Regional Commissioner, Coach Administrator, Referee Administrator and Division Commissioner. The following criteria will be considered when selecting a coach: participation/involvement in the program, certifications, experience, coaching ability and commitment to the AYSO philosophies.

PLAYER SELECTION
In recruiting a Select team the coach should first solicit player recommendations from each coach in the respected division; however, the select coach is not obligated to act upon those recommendations. Recommendations and/or selection may be based on the player’s skill level, ranking, commitment and parent participation. To qualify to play on a Select team a player must meet the following criteria:

- Have played in the most recent regular fall season
- Be in good standing - no disciplinary action
- The player must play in the same division in which he/she played in during the most recent regular fall season
- The player must have participated in at least 50% of the games their team was scheduled to play unless they were ill or injured and are able to present a medical report from their doctor indicating the period of injury or illness and allowing them to once again participate
- No more than four players may come from any one team

Regional Commissioner will review all special circumstances.

The select coach has final say on the players chosen to be on their team and may select or not select players for any reason. Coaches may not hold tryouts and are not to recruit players until the authorized date determined by the Select Committee.

LEVEL OF COMMITTMENT
Time - Participation on a Select Team requires an increased level of commitment from the coaches, the players and their parents. Players are expected to punctually attend all games, practices and team events. Parents must understand that these teams require a certain amount of local travel and that tournament and league games can be scheduled Saturdays, Sundays and occasionally during the week. (Usually only to make up for rained out games.)  Teams may also decide to participate in tournaments that may require overnight stays.

Volunteerism - As with all AYSO teams, parents are expected to volunteer for team positions. Each team is required to supply a team of three certified referees for league and tournament play. It is beneficial to the coach and team to have a team treasurer, team parent, referee coordinator and others to help with paperwork and uniform ordering.

Financial - There is also more of a financial commitment as these teams are designed to be self supported. Players will be responsible for registration fees, spirit clothing (optional), travel and tournament fees. If your child is asked to participate in the Select program the coach will give you an estimate of what the team costs should be. Teams can choose to do fundraising to lower their fees.
