Call for Nominations for Regional Commissioner

Our current Regional Commissioner, Jim Wills, will step down at the end of this month after three years in the position, as well as decades volunteering in other important roles for the region.  We are looking for someone to fill the position starting November 1 through the next Board elections in May, as well as for the three-year term that begins in May.

The position is open to any member of our AYSO community who believes they can effectively lead Claremont AYSO into the future.  We are actively searching for candidates now and urge you to make nominations or apply yourself.

Qualified candidates should have strong leadership skills and work well in a team environment.  The Regional Commissioner must be able to delegate tasks to appropriate board members, but also be able to “pick up the slack” where board positions are vacant or not clearly defined.  Candidates should also be willing to work with the community to recruit new board members as needed.

The Regional Commissioner is a 'National Executive' role and has certain financial and management responsibilities to the National Organization.  The time commitment involved in this position is approximately nine hours per week during active playing seasons.  This commitment is greatly reduced during off season periods.

As the leader of Claremont AYSO, the Regional Commissioner will:

  • Support and implement the AYSO mission and initiatives with the assistance of other Regional Board members
  • Take responsibility for Region finances, as required by the National Office
  • Recruit AYSO community members to volunteer for Board positions
  • Hold Board elections to appoint Board members
  • Publish regional guidelines on the operation of AYSO programs
  • Comply with the National accident insurance plan
  • Budget for and attend AYSO’s National Annual General Meeting (NAGM)
  • Oversee dispute resolution in the region
  • Maintain oversight of the region’s finances
  • Preside at all board meetings
  • Attend at least one Area meeting per year
  • Maintain close relationships with AYSO Area and Section Directors
  • Coordinate Area and Sectional activities through the Directors
  • Pass a background check

AYSO provides a number of training courses for new Regional Commissioners:

  • Regional Commissioner Job Training
  • Orientation
  • Introduction to Management Training
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Safe Haven and Concussion

Anyone interested in applying, or nominating another party, should provide the following information to the Nominating Committee chairperson, Laura Mandzok (
    [email protected]; 714-321-1665).

  • Contact Information.  A telephone number (or numbers) and e-mail address.
  • A simple bio explaining any relevant experience. Some ideas:
    • AYSO experience as a coach, referee, commissioner, or in positions with or advising the Regional, Area, Section, or National organizations
    • AYSO training certifications in Management, Coaching, Refereeing, Instructing, or Assessing
    • Professional/Work Experience that demonstrates your ability to be an effective leader.
    • Personal and professional references from members of the Claremont AYSO community and others
    • Other sports or non-profit experience (including board, committee, or leadership positions you held)
    • Other accomplishments or awards.
  • A candidate statement answering the following questions:
    • Why do you want to be the Regional Commissioner?
    • What is the role of AYSO within the Claremont community?
    • What are the top three challenges you see facing the Region and what solutions do you recommend?
    • What are the top three things you wish to achieve during your term and how do you propose achieving them?

If you have any questions, please contact one of the Board Members on the committee, Laura Mandzok or Chris Hayes ([email protected]; 301-395-3384).  The full Nominating Committee also includes Terry Wolff, Ken Mitchell, and Mike Orrison.

Time is of the essence.  Please submit your nominations and applications, or let us know you intend to do so, as soon as possible.
